Analysis of a supplier performance evaluation model – a case study in a metal-mechanic industry

Abstract

The intense competition has forced private companies to pursue excellence in managerial areas such as relationship with suppliers. The evaluation of performance of suppliers has grown vital to the company’s goals as its achievement depend directly on acquired materials. This paper discusses the importance of the purchasing function and the prominent role suppliers play in organizational decision-making. The empirical part of this descriptive research was based on a case study in a industrial company in the metal-mechanic sector of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The data gathering process was carried out through interviews with managers, bibliographical research and documental analysis. The research used different theoretical models (strategic, tactical, and operational) to contrast against the methods of performance evaluation of suppliers used by the analyzed company. The main results show that the analyzed company lacks developments in its supplier performance evaluation system such as information on total costs, information on delivery flexibility, and information on financial and managerial skills. Nonetheless analyzed in a single case, this study has the potential to contribute to the improvement of supplier performance evaluation systems in similar companies, especially in the metal-mechanic sector.
