Internationalization of small and medium enterprises: a multi-sector study in the region Alto Uruguai of the Rio Grande do Sul state

Abstract

This article is based on the Nordic School of International Business theory and aims to describe how happened the internationalization of the small and medium industrial companies from the Region Alto Uruguai of Rio Grande do Sul State and the entry mode they have chosen to achieve the international market. It constitutes in a qualitative and exploratory-descriptive multi-case study, with utilization of the content analysis method. The sample is composed by sixteen companies from the sectors of: food, metal-mechanic, furnishing, paper and packaging. The study concluded that the entry mode chosen by the companies was the exportation and that the internationalization involved firstly the close cultural and geographical countries. Additionally, the accumulation of learning permitted to the organizations increase the level of international involvement, attending to a higher number of countries, including those with higher geographical and cultural distance.
