Abstract

This work has as area of study the municipality of Jaú, located in the state of São Paulo, where the Bauru, Guarani and Serra Geral aquifers are found, the latter being the most significant in the area. The methodology involved the application of the Susceptibility Index (SI) in order to evaluate the areas most susceptible to contamination in the municipality. What differs this index from the others is the use of data regarding land use and coverage, being a fundamental attribute for the area of study, which has large tracts of agricultural cultivation. In the results, it has been possible to identify the importance of this attribute and its relevance for the classification of susceptibility of aquifers and, when associated with other plans used in the calculation of SI, proved to be determinant for the classification of the area. By calculating the SI, a medium risk classification was obtained in 73% of the territorial area of the municipality. The method used to calculate the susceptibility to contamination of aquifers proved to be efficient and suitable for adequate environmental management of the municipality.
