Abstract

This article analyzes Revista A Escola: a magazine of the public teachers' union of the State of Paraná (1906-1921), published in the city of Curitiba. Methodologically, the magazine was located and cataloged from the Digital Newspaper Library, which is part of the National Library's collection. The aim is to present the predominant educational ideologies during the magazine's circulation period, as well as their manifestations in the periodical. In pursuit of this objective, we sought to discuss the French influence on the magazine, with an emphasis on the Belle Époque, which exerted a strong presence in the Brazilian population's imagination and appears prominently in the magazine, encouraging the learning of the French language, with a specific section on the subject, called "Estudinho de Francês." As a result, we can affirm that the ideal of being, speaking, and behaving like a civilized European was encouraged by the magazine and was linked to the interest of travelers and intellectuals who, in the first decades of the 19th century, increased their attraction to South America.
