Biodiversity as a driver of climate change in Mozambique

The present study entitled “Biodiversity as a Driver of Climate Change in Mozambique” analyzes the relationship between ecosystem degradation and the worsening of climate change in the Mozambican context. It highlights the importance of biodiversity as an essential element for environmental balance and for mitigating climate impacts, showing how its loss accelerates processes of desertification, erosion, and ecological instability. The main objective of the research was to understand how biodiversity loss contributes to climate change, as well as to identify national policies and strategies aimed at environmental conservation. The methodology was based on a bibliographic review and document analysis, using primary and secondary sources such as government reports, scientific studies, and data from international organizations. The results indicate that deforestation, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, and unplanned agricultural expansion have significantly reduced vegetation cover and altered the natural carbon cycle. It is concluded that, in Mozambique, biodiversity loss is both a cause and a consequence of climate change. Therefore, strengthening conservation policies, environmental education, and the sustainable management of natural resources are fundamental measures to promote ecological resilience and ensure the country's sustainable development.
