Abstract

This theoretical essay, based on scientific literature, presents a review of the historical, social, and cultural constitution of the western mesoregion of Santa Catarina, which extends from the occupation of the territory by indigenous peoples and caboclos to the present day, when these indigenous peoples continue to be marginalized and excluded from society, along with international immigrants from the global south, who are brought in to fill the labor shortage in the meatpacking industry. This constitution of the region, marked by the exclusion of indigenous peoples and caboclos to the detriment of white Europeans, laid the foundations that determine how Western society welcomes immigrants from the global south today.
