historical aspects of the encounters between science and agriculture in Brazil in the 19th (1860-1889)

Abstract

The objective of this investigation is to analyze the encounters between science and agriculture in Brazil during the second half of the 19th century. It seeks to study the processes of establishing spaces dedicated to the scientific treatment of agriculture, as well as to discuss the diffusion of debates related to the theme. In addition to engaging with the historiography, an analysis and cross-referencing of records collected from the reports of the Ministério da Agricultura, Comércio e Obras Públicas will be conducted, as well as from articles published in the periodical O Auxiliador da Indústria Nacional, one of the primary vehicles for addressing science and agriculture at the time. Two books authored by military engineers who actively participated in the debates will also be the subject of analysis. Generally, the historiography covering the period has made little progress in the discussion regarding the exchanges that occurred between science and agriculture and the results of this encounter. Regarding this subject, contrary to the prevailing view, Brazil was far from being backward and isolated. As will be demonstrated in the analysis, there was an intense process of circulation of ideas and proposals at the time, which originated from various sources and were developed and disseminated by scientists, private entities, periodicals, and the State.
