Abstract

This article analyzes the legal processes of the 19th century in the Province of Pará, North of the Empire of Brazil, with the intention of discussing the category “possession” associated with social demands and constituted by legal relationships. The records of maintenance of possession will be analyzed to understand the ideas and legal concepts that intermediated the relationships between people and things and how they developed specific and specific interpretations of what was demanded. In this sense, it was identified which normative options were disputed and mobilized by historical subjects, as well as how these interact and tension with interpretations made of legal categories to legitimize or delegitimize a possessory action.
