Abstract

This article aims to analyze the category of suburb as a historical concept, based on temporal and spatial particularities. As an example, we present the concept of "Carioca suburb" from sources in colonial and imperial Rio de Janeiro. In this context, we also analyze the landowner networks that experienced these spaces as a result of their land ownership rights and strategies for land transfer and negotiation. Three border properties are the spatial focus chosen for our analysis – Engenho Novo, Engenho de Dentro and Engenho da Serra.
