Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the motivations behind the engagement of rural workers in the Rural Trade Union Movement (MSR). To do this, we carried out semi-structured interviews with leaders and farmers who are members and non-members of the Rural Workers' Union (STTR) in the municipality of Tomé-Açu, in the north-east of Pará. The results of the study showed two motivations: material – linked to the union's services – and immaterial – related to individual subjectivities and collective identity. Among non-members, land was the central motivation, exemplified in the case of the collective action carried out in the Mancha Negra camp. The role of the union and its leaders proved fundamental both for mobilizing new members and for building social engagement in the movement.
