Abstract

Collective action in rural associations formed by members of family farmers is fundamental for representation, sociability, and access to benefits provided through public policies. Oftentimes, however, the challenges presented by collective action are difficult to surmount, with the result being failed attempts at collective organization. The objective of the article is to analyze the collective action of family farmers in active and inactive rural associations in the municipality of Capitão Poço in the Northeast of Pará, Eastern Amazon. The qualitative and quantitative approach included secondary and primary data collection with open and semi-structured historical interviews and observations. The general conclusion is that the dynamics and longevity of associations are based on concrete, long-lasting activities with plausible workload for members, with clear rules regarding obligations and rights in actions that go beyond production and commercialization, but which also guarantee fun, joy and spirituality among the association members.
