Introduction: Demographic changes in Brazil in recent decades have increased the need for elderly caregivers, an activity that brings psychosocial and mental health challenges. Objective: To understand the mental health status of elderly caregivers. Methodology: This qualitative study was conducted in two municipalities in western Santa Catarina and involved ten women aged between 20 and 60 years. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, which were subsequently transcribed and analyzed using content analysis. The study fully complied with Resolutions No. 466 and No. 510 of the National Health Council, adhering to all ethical principles recommended for research involving human subjects. Results: The routine of elderly caregivers is demanding and involves long working hours, especially among informal caregivers, and their mental health is characterized by high levels of exhaustion, stress, and overload. Furthermore, elderly caregivers experience a lack of support and information for providing care, absence of family support, and limited time for leisure activities. Final Considerations: The findings highlight the importance of promoting care interventions for elderly caregivers, offering training and guidance through public services to clarify doubts and discuss general issues related to caregiving, providing psychotherapeutic groups, and encouraging participation in leisure and self-care activities in arder to improve well-being and prevent health problems.
